Everytime someone ask me that question I want to dissapear!
People can be really judgmental regarding to musical taste (even me when I was younger). That's why It is a really hard question for me to answer. It appears that my life style kept me away from the "cool" stuff going on in music business during my childhood. Let me tell you why:
I was a 90's kid so yes my first record was a LP. I think I must had been 5 years old. I hardly remember that my first LP was a Deutsche Grammophon record (I do remember the yellow logo) but I have no idea which one it was. But it was definitely "Classical music". And that was how it began.
My very first musical influence is "classical music". I actually played percussion in a Symphonic orchestra since I was 10 years old. I must say my favorite composer is Gustav Mahler also Bela Bartok, Stravinsky and so many others. So while most of my friends were listening lots of comercial things I was drowned deep into percussion and symphonic orchestras. That doesn't mean I didn't heard any other kind of music. Lets just say I wasn't that into it but I did had some preferences like Blink 182, Green Day, Coldplay, Oasis, Michael Jackson, Queen, Sting, Phill Collins, Whitney Houston, Jamiroquai, Savage garden, Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz, Pink, Incubus, Natalie Imbruglia, Travis, Creed, Shania Twain , Eminem, Alcia Keys, Staind, Ray Charles, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Santana, Los Cafres, Los Pericos, Godwana, Vicente Fernández, Alejandro Fernández, Gualberto Ibarreto, Serenata Guayanesa, Soledad Bravo, Alí Primera, Silvio Rodriguez, Pablo Milanés ,Héctor Lavoe, Rubén Blades, Los Adolescentes, Carlos Vives, Marc Anthony, Juan Luis Guerra.
I must confess neither my sister, parents, uncles, aunts or friends really shared their musical tastes with me or not that I can remember. So all the music I hear is part of a discovery journey that I have decided to share with you. I decided in college that I wanted to be a sound engineer and I kind of started to realize I was fucked about music background. So to mend that It kind of went like this: After university I met a group of friends that had a reggae band and that was when I fell for Bob Marley and Reggae. And in this part of my life I also had this great connection with The Beatles, Radiohead, Jack Jonshon and some other things that I had discover trough some friends and life like Michael Buble, Amy Winehouse, Daughter, Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, Manu Chao, Devendra Banhart, Esperanza Spalding, Janis Joplin, Edith Piaf, Zaz, Cultura Profética, Residente Calle 13, Zoé, Seeed, María Rita, Natiruts, John Mayer, Richard Bona, Bobby Mcferrin, Miriam Makeeba and basically every music related to the cultural roots of every country in the world (folk music).
But I was still struggling with the short library of sounds in my head to become a sound engineer. Then a person came to my life who started to open my eyes to listen and do other types of music. Trough him I knew jazz but He is obsessed with jazz so that was a little hard to digest. Actually It still is. From that collaboration came things that I love too like Bill Evans, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Amstrong, Wynton Marsalis, Miles Davis,Nina Simone, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix. Snarky Puppy, Chet Baker, Michel Camilo, Tomatito.
Of course I have heard other great bands that are a "must" for music reference but from them there are just a couple of song that I enjoy and not all the music like Metallica, Marilyn Manson, U2, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Muse, Pynk Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, Rush, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kiss, Led Zepellin, The Who, Guns N' Roses, Foo Figthers, Pearl Jam, The Doors, Rolling Stones, Björk, Nirvana, Gustavo Cerati, Soda Stereo.
It is so frustrating to know that there is still about 98% of music that I need to know and I wont have time to listen but I try every day to listen something new. Feel free to recommend anything you would think I'll love.
Every name you read in this confession is so different from each other (and I've always felt I have rare taste) but all of them had touched my soul in a way that they are all my favorite kind of music and my favorite band...
